Emptiness should never characterize God's kids. The souls of God's children are designed to function best when overflowing. Emptiness is a spiritual malady that God runs to fill. Some might be pleasantly surprised to know that God designed us to be consumers. This battle for what will fill our lives is something God is actively engaged in. The guilt of consuming those things that reflect compromise, needs to be substituted with those supernatural things that will fill us with life - life overflowing.
Drinking is a common metaphor used by God to describe how he intends to fill personal emptiness. We were born to consume. And as much as we like to consume certain things that satisfy, God offers up his best and says "drink up". It's no accident that God uses a drinking metaphor to describe what happens when he fills us up. This is vivid:
"And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit..."
Simple and powerful. Anybody in the world can get this metaphor. God's not building case for not drinking, he's building a case for drinking more of one particular thing. Just as too much wine can make an otherwise normal person do crazy things, so it is that drinking in the Spirit can cause an otherwise normal person to do extraordinary things. Normal people can be moved to do either the crazy or the extraordinary, it all depends on what they're consuming. God captures the almost comical comparison. Let's see, if we had to chose between being hung-over and near death or overflowing with life - yep, it's a no-brainer.
Do a "180 Now". Never settle for empty again. Tip your soul back and drink deeply of the Spirit. Don't stop until you're overflowing. And if you see love, joy, peace and other good God things pouring out of you, stay put, you're drinking from the right well. Never forget one big spiritual premise: It's not okay with God for his kids to run on empty. Drink deeply of God today!
